How I work

I create a safe and confidential space where people can come when they are struggling with life, or have a particular issue that they are finding difficult. We don’t necessarily have to have a specific issue to bring to counselling. It might be that we have a general sense of dissatisfaction with life, feel lonely or disconnected, or just feel that we need someone to confide in.

My approach is down-to-earth, understanding, challenging, real, insightful and honest. However, I don’t have answers or give advice, but what I do is listen in a very particular way that can help people to make sense of their experiences and perhaps see their difficulties from a different perspective. I have found that the person-centred approach, which creates the conditions for personal growth and healing, enables people to get in touch with their inner resources and find their own answers and their own way forward. As Carl Rogers, the founder of the Person-Centred approach, said:

‘In my early professional years I was asking the question: How can I treat, or cure, or change this person? Now I would phrase the question in this way: How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for his (or her) own personal growth?’

I often feel that the Person-Centred approach is misunderstood or characterised as wishy-washy and passive or as just listening or being ‘nice’. This is not how I experience it and it is not how I practice. I see the approach as one that has the potential to be delivered in a dynamic and engaged way, which can be challenging when appropriate. I also know that challenge can happen in subtle and gentle ways.

Although my approach is fundamentally Person Centred I’m also influenced by and interested in other ideas, techniques and approaches such as Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Psychodynamic, Art Therapy, Mindfulness and Meditation.

I have regular clinical supervision which supports me and enables me to reflect on how I’m working and ensure that I am practicing professionally, effectively and ethically. As an accredited registered member of the BACP I work within their ethical framework.

After the initial contact (my phone or email), I will usually arrange to meet with you for a first session in which we can decide if we wish to work together. Sessions are usually weekly (or can be fortnightly) for one hour per week at a mutually convenient time agreed by ourselves. My practice days are usually Monday - Thursdays 8am-6pm. I also offer a limited number of evening sessions.

I offer sessions in-person or on Zoom.
